Car Rental Firms Agree Not to Rent Recalled Cars
The SF Chronicle today reports that Enterprise, Avis, Dollar and Hertz agreed to ban rentals and sales of recalled cars.
The companies agreed to support legislation by Sen. Barbara Boxer to codify the ban. Boxer and co-sponsor Sen. Charles Schumer promised to push the legislation through the lame-duck session of Congress this year.
The bill in Congress is named the "Raechel and Jacqueline Houck Safe Rental Car Act of 2012" after the two sisters died in a fire after they lost control of the steering in a PT Cruiser they had rented from Enterprise.
Their mother, Cally Houck fought a five-year legal battle, winning a $15 million verdict from an Alameda County jury. Cally Houck pushed for a law to ban the practice, teaming with Boxer and Rosemary Shahan, president of Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety in Sacramento.
